Common Dorm Measurement SizesMost college dorms use a dorm bed that measures 39 inches by 80 inches.  Those extra 5 inches usually require you to purchase special size sheeting that uses a longer fitted sheet.  Other items requiring an upgrade from the common twin size are mattress pads, mattress toppers and fiber beds. Those items also need to be 39 inches wide by 80 inches in length.

What most students and parents don't know, is that once you're done with your dorm bedding - it can frequently be repurposed at home on a common twin bed. You can also donate your feather or fiber beds to someone with an adjustable king bed as they too require twin xl size items. Not only is that a green option but a nice thing to do for a loved one.

Aside from the length and width - there are also things like the depth of the bed which matter (especially for fitted sheets). Most dorm beds have a 7-9 inch height. Typically if you plan to use a mattress pad or topper on your bed - you should be fine with a fitted sheet with a 12-14 inch depth.  However - if you plan to add a feather or fiber bed - thus adding significant height - do consider purchasing deep pocket sheets.
